WASHINGTON, DC (KELO.com) — Rep. Dusty Johnson says South Dakota is missing the opportunity of large scale data center development. Rather than recruiting the centers to be built in the state, current state leadership is chasing them away, while states like North Dakota are reaping the benefits of the jobs and tax revenues they produce. Johnson says, “North Dakota has been aggressive in recruiting them. They’ve gotten tremendous property tax from the data centers, and they have reduced their electric rates in North Dakota by more than any other state in the country. Those are the kind of opportunities that could come to South Dakota. Unfortunately, we had a legislature and a Governor that said ‘no’ to that opportunity, and as a result, data centers are not coming to South Dakota.” Following this year’s legislative session, Applied Digital said a proposed data center it was planning to build in the Toronto area probably won’t be built.
