SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — A couple of area high profile zoning proposals will be decided Tuesday night. The proposed move of Smithfield Foods from The Falls to Foundation Park on the city’s northwestern edge goes back before the City Council. There was strong opposition to the project at a recent townhall meeting in Crooks, which is near the proposed building site. But Sioux Falls City Councilor Miranda Boese reported hearing overwhelmingly positive statements about the project from residents when the council approved first reading of the plan a week ago. The Council will consider approval of a Tax Increment Financing District – or TIF – and a Conditional Use Permit for the $1.5-billion plant. The TIF would defer close to 90-million dollars in taxes to help finance construction of a wastewater treatment facility.
The other proposal up for consideration is in Canton. A group of rural Lincoln County residents is closely watching a zoning application for a proposed large dairy operation. MiKota Holdings LLC of Michigan wants to build a 62-hundred head dairy in Lincoln County. Opponents are concerned about water pollution from runoff, high levels of heavy truck traffic on area roads and odor. The members of the neighborhood will challenge the plans at a Planning and Zoning Commission hearing.
