PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Governor Rhoden calls it the beginning of the largest property tax cut in South Dakota history. Legislators have approved the Governor’s plan to allow counties to add a half-penny sales tax to provide property tax relief. That came despite criticism from Representative Will Mortenson that it favors counties with high sales volumes and high home values. Mortenson called it a “reverse Robin Hood bill – taking from the poor to give to the rich.” Despite the criticism, the bill passed 48-19.
The second bill creates a property tax reduction fund by allowing the sales tax to return to 4 1/2 percent from the current 4.2 percent rate. That increase is scheduled to happen in 2027. The Governor says he’ll work to get the second bill passed when it is debated in the House Monday, which is the last day of the main run of the legislative session. Together, Governor Rhoden says the measures would create South Dakota’s largest ever property tax cut.
