SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Next stop: the Sioux Falls City Council. The city’s planning commission has approved a Tax Increment Financing District for moving the Smithfield Foods plant from the falls to the city’s northwest side. That came over the objection of residents near the proposed plant. Nancy Simon’s home is just across County Highway 130 on the project’s north side. She says her family should be given the same offer as her neighbors across the street received – an offer to purchase their home so they can avoid all of the unpleasantries of living near the facility, and the inevitable loss of value in their home. A Smithfield spokesperson says the company tried to keep the facility as far away from residential property as possible.
