Governor Rhoden’s budget plan satisfies no one in the opposition party or his own. South Dakota Democrats say Governor Rhoden’s budget misses the mark on affordability issues. Party leaders in the legislature are concerned about the lack of increases for schools, community service providers and state employees. They also say the package doesn’t address food, housing and childcare problems families are dealing with.
From his own party, former republican State House Majority Leader Will Mortenson says the budget proposal reflects an economy that’s stuck in the mud. Mortenson says South Dakota has slipped from being the top state for business in 2013 to being ranked #35 now.
