SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — It’s far short of their needs, but South Dakota’s two largest airports are picking up some extra federal funds for terminal improvements. Sioux Falls is getting just under 350-thousand dollars, while Rapid City is getting 413-thousand. Airport Executive Director Dan Letellier recently told KELO.com news that the need for five more terminal gates is pressing, with the terminal filled with travelers and gates with “standing-room-only.” Without new gates, Letellier says adding new flights and destinations will be extremely difficult, which will eventually mean higher prices for air travelers.
In an effort to get ahead of that problem, Sioux Falls is beginning a scaled-down 108-million dollar plus project to add the new gates now, hoping to attract more funding as it goes to add other features later. The city council has approved a five-million dollar interest free loan for the project, conditional upon a match from the state in the form of a grant or loans.
