PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Hundreds of new laws passed by this year’s legislature take effect today. Among them is the so-called “bathroom bill” which bans transgender people from using school bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity. Supporters say it protects girls in private spaces. Opponents say it’s a knock against the transgender community.
Another new law taking effect today is the updated “Move Over” law. On multi-lane highways you must move over to the furthest lane away from vehicles with flashing lights. For two-lane highways you must also slow down to 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit at least 300 feet before the location of slow or stopped vehicles with flashing lights. If the posted speed limit is 20-miles an hour or less, you need to slow down to five miles per hour on two lane roads.
