PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — South Dakota’s summer travel season is shaping up to be a strong one, even as some travelers tighten their budgets. Tourism officials say they’re seeing steady interest from nearby states like Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska as families look for affordable, close-to-home vacations. According to South Dakota Tourism Secretary Jim Hagen, the state checks all the boxes being budget-friendly, family-focused, and full of outdoor adventures. Officials say shorter trips may be the trend, but overall, expectations for the season are high. With summer just getting started, the state’s tourism team is ramping up ads, social media, and visitor guides to keep the momentum going. Nearly 15-million visitors spent more than five billion dollars in the state last year.
