WAKONDA, SD (KELO.com) — South Dakota leads the nation in hemp harvests, but most of it still gets processed out of state. That’s about to change with a new hemp facility in Wakonda set to open this fall. Dakota Hemp’s plant will handle up to three-thousand acres of hemp each year, almost as much as the whole state harvested last year. The move is expected to speed up business for local farmers. Owner John Peterson says the plant will make products like hemp pasta, wood items, and even building blocks called Hempcrete. The move is expected to speed up business for local farmers, processors, and manufacturers in South Dakota.
