SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — The Department of Corrections has busted a drug-smuggling ring at the state penitentiary. Corrections Secretary Kellie Wasko says an internal investigation involving the Division of Criminal Investigation identified and stopped the drug smuggling, which she says was tied to three inmate overdose deaths. Wasko says drugs were delivered into prison facilities through counterfeit packages, privileged mail, and by visitors. As a result, non-contact visits have been enacted in some prison facilities, and may be expanded. Secretary Wasko says other policy changes may also follow.
