SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Thursday appears to mark the beginning of the Governor’s race in South Dakota. State House Speaker Jon Hansen confirms he’ll announce his candidacy this evening, along with Lieutenant Governor running mate, Speaker Pro Tempore Karla Lems of Canton. The race will be different starting this year, thanks to a new state law allowing gubernatorial candidates to name their own lieutenant governor. In the past, the Lieutenant Governor candidate was selected at state party conventions. The new law leaves that decision in the hands of the gubernatorial candidate starting this election cycle. Hansen and Lems worked closely together in recent years opposing eminent domain for carbon capture pipelines.
They formally announce their candidacy at Military Heritage Alliance in Sioux Falls Thursday evening.
