SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) โ Weโre about to see some changes in Downtown Sioux Falls parking. Large pickups and SUVโs will face a 15-dollar fine for parking in a four-block area of Phillips Avenue starting next month. That change was approved unanimously by the City Commission last fall. Sioux Falls Public Parking Manager Matt Nelson says itโs a safety issue caused by the narrow portion of road between 9th and 13th Streets. Vehicles exceeding 19 feet in length extend into the traffic lanes of Phillips Avenue, causing vehicles to have to swerve to miss them. Motorists will see a white line painted near the traffic lanes of the affected stalls, and if your vehicle extends beyond that line, you will be subject to a $15 citation. Those lines will be painted on the stalls on the evening of Sunday, April 13th.
Two other changes are also being made. Street-side parking meters will be enforced on Saturdays now in addition to Monday-Friday. That change is intended to create a steady rotation of vehicles stopping at downtown retailers for short durations of time. Saturday and evening off-street parking will continue to be free. The other change is an optional text-to-park app for paying for your stall. The system has been tested in the new Steel District area of Phillips Avenue and appears to be well-accepted. All three changes will take effect May 1st.
