PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — South Dakota lawmakers are waiting to hear what Governor Larry Rhoden has in mind to provide property tax relief. Legislators passed a bill this year to limit property valuation assessments over the next five years, but admit that doesn’t reduce property taxes. Republican Representative Karla Lems of Canton says an interim study committee has its work cut out for it. She says early indications are the committee’s discussion will include a closer look at the state aid to education formula, but most observers agree there isn’t much appetite to cut education spending or funds for local governments. Governor Rhoden says his staff is working on a plan that he says will be revealed in coming days.
