PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — Election integrity is still on the minds of the state legislature.
South Dakota’s Senate State Affairs Committee advanced one election bill Friday while killing another.
The committee voted 8-1 to approve Senate Bill 75, requiring citizenship status to be shown on state driver’s licenses and ID cards.
Supporters say this will help election officials verify voter eligibility more efficiently.
Opponents worry the change could lead to discrimination, as licenses are used for many purposes beyond voting.
The committee also effectively killed Senate Bill 73, which would have changed voter registration requirements.
