SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls City Hall is taking some cautious steps toward purchasing land for a proposed new downtown convention center. Mayor Paul TenHaken, City Council Chair Curt Soehl and Vice-Chair Rich Merkouris have selected eight members for the Riverline Steering Committee. Councilor Merkouris says the committee will review a proposed purchase contract of 8.1-million dollars to buy land for the project.
The land in question is the site of the old Sears building on the east side of downtown, which currently houses the Department of Social services. DSS will move to the new One Stop center being built at Dawley Farms on the east side of the city. Councilor Merkouris says the land purchase isn’t the only question that needs to be resolved.
Councilor Merkouris says even if the land purchase is made, moving forward to build the convention center wouldn’t happen without a public vote.
