SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — People ordering prescriptions from online pharmacies may be getting more than they bargained for – and it could cost them their lives. The Justice Department has indicted a number of individuals for selling counterfeit prescription drugs online. The CDC is warning against online purchases, because some of the unregulated drugs contain fentanyl. That warning is echoed by Lewis Drug owner Mark Griffin.
The online pharmacies are hurting legitimate national and local pharmacies like Lewis Drug…and they’re killing some people with unregulated counterfeit pills. Griffin says it’s critical to deal with legitimate companies.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that there are online pharmacies that claim to sell prescription drugs at deeply discounted prices, often without requiring a prescription. These internet-based pharmacies often sell unapproved, counterfeit, or otherwise unsafe medicines outside the safeguards followed by licensed pharmacies. Individuals should only take medications prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy.
