SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — It’s a scholarship program that puts Native Americans on the path to home ownership. South Dakota’s Technical Colleges have partnered with the South Dakota native Home Ownership Coalition and Lakota Funds to offer Native American students scholarships of up to 10-thousand dollars. Marcella Prokop of Southeast Tech in Sioux Falls says the idea is to help students learn a construction trade to gain understanding of the home building and ownership process.
Prokop says improving High School graduation rates among Native Americans is a critical first step.
Native Americans who have graduated from High School are often uncertain of how they’ll do in College. Southeast Tech in Sioux Falls has created a new staff position to help those students overcome those fears.
Students must also be enrolled in their Tribe to be eligible for the Scholarship.
