SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — The American Legion and VFW are gathering to honor POWs and those who are still Missing In Action. This is POW/MIA day. In Sioux Falls, career Army pilot Bill McGinnis is leading the effort.
There are more than 81-thousand U-S soldiers who were held as prisoners of war and those who are still missing in action from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. McGinnis flew helicopters in Vietnam and served 36 years in the Army as a pilot. For him, POW/MIA day is personal.
Efforts to find the missing never stop. For people like Bill McGinnis, the flame of hope is never extinguished.
Stories like those of Robert Bartlett of Onida, South Dakota make it all worthwhile for McGinnis. Bartlett went missing in action during a World War II battle in Europe. Last month, he finally came home.
There will be a ceremony in remembrance of POW/MIA Day at 6:30 Friday evening at Veterans Memorial park on West Baily Street near Covell Lake.
