SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — There’s a potential storm cloud on the horizon as Sioux Falls City Councilors begin voting on budget items next week. That cloud is called Initiated Measure 28 – which started out as a repeal of the state sales tax on food. Now, questions are swirling that it might also remove the tax on other consumable items, with a much broader impact. This morning, City Finance Director Shawn Prichett said, for now, a 77-million dollar aquatics bond is being paused as a result.
The pause on the aquatics bond will last until after the November election. It had already been delayed several times to resolve questions by City Councilors. That’s due, at least in part, to IM-28.
If IM-28 passes, Prichett says the delay could be longer, and the city budget could also require more attention as the measure’s impact on revenues is weighed. In its current form, the proposed city budget sits at 781-million dollars.
