DES MOINES, IA (KELO.com) — It’s an approval – with a catch. Summit Carbon Solutions’ proposed Carbon Capture pipeline was approved by the Iowa Utilities Board Tuesday. But, it’s conditioned upon approval by North and South Dakota regulators. North Dakota’s Public Service Commission completed hearings on Summit’s re-application. It hasn’t ruled yet, but Summit CEO Lee Blank is optimistic.
Blank says the company will re-apply for a permit in South Dakota next month. Summit’s initial applications were denied in North and South Dakota last year. CO2 pipeline opponents in South Dakota say they’re confident they’ve submitted enough petition signatures to overturn a key pipeline bill signed into law. If voters overturn Senate Bill 201, Spink County Farmer Ed Fischbach says South Dakota would go back to where it was when the Public Utilities Commission rejected Summit’s original application.
Pipeline opponents say they turned in roughly 10-thousand more petition signatures than needed to get the referral on the ballot.
