SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) โ Another stark warning from Sioux Falls police โ street racing is not only illegal, it is sometimes deadly. That was the case in the fatal motorcycle accident on the cityโs northeast side early Wednesday morning. Lieutenant Andrew Siebenborn says at least two motorcycles were involved in a race which reached speeds of more than 100-miles per hour. He says it was being watched by a number of spectators.
The race ended in tragedy when 35 year old Anatoliy Manuylo of Valley Springs failed to negotiate the corner at North Sycamore Avenue and Benson Road and hit a parked car with his motorcycle. Police Chief Jon Thum says new laws and tougher penalties are needed.
Street racing is by far the number one complaint received at the police department. Chief Thum says the department has adopted a zero tolerance policy, but admits thereโs only so much they can do.
Thum says officers have issued over 300 citations tied to street racing so far this year. Heโs working the area legislators in hopes of creating new laws that increase penalties.
