WASHINGTON, DC (KELO.com) — Senator John Thune is among the top names being circulated for replacing Mitch McConnell. McConnell announced the end of his record-setting term a leader of Senate Republicans late Wednesday morning. Thune is the number two ranking Senate Republican. Observers say that puts Thune on the list of potential successors.
Senator Mike Rounds is on board to see Thune take the leadership of Senate Republicans. Officially, Thune hasn’t announced plans to pursue the post. Rounds told CNN that Thune’s recent endorsement of Donald Trump is the right posture for someone in the leadership role.
Rounds says Thune’s campaign for the leadership position began a long time ago. McConnell plans to serve out this term as Minority Leader, which ends this fall.
