SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — A long-time household name is part of one of the newest growth areas of Sioux Falls. Lewis Drug is holding the Grand Opening for its newest store at Veterans Parkway and East Madison Street. The company has left its mark throughout the region of South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. Company Owner Mark Griffin says part of the success of the Lewis brand is tied to remaining true to its roots as a neighborhood store and pharmacy.
The company was started in 1942 by Griffin’s father. Griffin guided the company through the onslaught of “big-box” stores in the eighties and nineties with the arrival of K-mart, Target and Walmart. Now the new competition comes from neighborhood pharmacies backed by large corporations like Walgreens. Griffin says Lewis stores have changed to keep pace with the market, but haven’t lost their friendly neighborhood image in making updates.
In the late 1990’s, Lewis teamed up with Sanford Health Systems and has developed more than 50 family drug stores throughout the region.
