WASHINGTON, DC (KELO.com) — It’s a couple of months overdue, but the U-S Senate has given final legislative approval to a new defense spending bill. The measure will have a major impact on Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City. The base will become home to the new B-21 Raider Stealth Bomber. Senator Mike Rounds helped to craft the bill, which also includes a pay raise for military members.
South Dakota will play a prominent role in the nation’s defense plan in a couple of areas. One area is in Cyber Security, a sector Senator Rounds says is being beefed up in the plan.
Dakota State University plays an important role in cyber security. The other area of prominence is in the nation’s nuclear capabilities. That’s where Rapid City’s Ellsworth Air Force base comes into play, as it becomes home to the new B-21 Raider Stealth Bomber. Senator Rounds says the new bomber is needed to stay ahead of China, which is pushing hard to take the lead.
The bill needs President Biden’s signature to take effect.
