SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — She’s trying to head off a prescription drug emergency. Governor Kristi Noem announced today that South Dakota is expanding its emergency inventory of prescription drugs to five more cities to prepare for shortages this winter like the ones that happened last winter. The emergency stockpile is housed and managed in partnership with Lewis Drug Stores. The governor is also sending a message to Washington that shortages of key medications can quickly become a national security issue.
The Governor is concerned that unfriendly nations like China have become the primary suppliers of generic drugs that are crucial to the U.S. She used her son Booker as an example of how critical those drugs can be.
The stockpile will now be expanded to include the cities of Aberdeen, Hot Springs, Mobridge, Pierre and Yankton.
