SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — This is a day of tragic remembrance – National Fentanyl Awareness Day. Fentanyl is deadly and often the focus of attention in discussions concerning drug problems. But actually, methamphetamines caused more overdose deaths in South Dakota last year. There were 26 drug overdose deaths in the state in 2022. Six of those were caused by fentanyl, while the other 20 involved meth. That’s how Diane Eide lost her son Trace just over two years ago.
Looking back, Eide says the time her son spent in prison was a lost opportunity to get him the help that he needed to overcome his addiction.
Former KELO Land TV News Anchor Angela Kennecke appeared at a news conference with Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead this week. After her daughter Emile died from a drug overdose, Kennecke founded Emile’s Hope, an organization to help people avoid and overcome drug addiction.
Over the past decade, the Opioid Epidemic has evolved from pharmaceutical pills to pressed pills and powders that are cut and laced with Fentanyl. It is estimated that 60% of all fentanyl pills that are not prescribed contain a fatal dosage.
