DELL RAPIDS, S.D. (KELO.com) — A Dell Rapids business made sure some kids were able to experience a memorable prom night. While high school students look forward to all of the events of prom, for some it can be too much. Saturday night, Pinz Bowling Alley in Dell Rapids hosted a Sensory Friendly Prom for special needs students.
Sensory parties are geared toward those with sensory processing issues who can become overwhelmed by things like bright lights or loud environments. Nichole North’s son attended. She was approached by other moms about having a sensory prom. North said, “There are quite a few kids who don’t attend regular prom for various reasons, but anxiety and sensory issues are a big reason for those in the world of special education.” She posted a request for donations on social media and called the response amazing. The families went to work creating the memorable night. “Ask the community of Dell Rapids and you shall receive”, North posted on social media. Pinz provided the location. Both Dell Rapids Public and Dell Rapids St. Mary’s schools let the event use their prom decor. Many businesses and individuals donated for prizes and snacks. 23 students registered for the prom. The Vegas themed night included a limo ride, Grand March, dinner, prizes and dancing.
Casey McCoy, Pinz owner, hopes he can help with future sensory proms and even see it expand to include other communities.
