WANNASKA, MN (KELO.com) — It was an unbearable situation near Wannaska, Minnesota, last week for a hibernating bear. The Minnesota DNR says when it was time for a winter snooze, the bear picked a culvert near a road to sleep away the winter. Melting snow flooded the bear out but he got stuck in the deep snow and ice. Minnesota’s DNR says some well-meaning people tried to dig out the bear. They also offered him pop tarts, lettuce, Swedish fish, and cat food. The bear was still focused on sleep though and ignored the not-so-healthy diet. Officials were able to rescue the 6-year-old bear. He was given a clean bill of health aside from being sleepy yet. Following the embearassing ordeal, the bear was taken to a state game sanctuary so he can continue hibernating.
