SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — As cleanup efforts continue across the KELO listening area, the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls is cautioning people about photokeratitis.
Photokeratitis, or snow blindness, is a painful, temporary eye condition caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays.
On a sunny day like today, clean fresh snow can reflect as much as 80% of UV radiation.
Snow blindness can cause several symptoms including pain, redness or a gritty sensation in the eyes, blurry or temporary loss of vision, as well as headaches and swelling.
As you head out to finish – or start – your shoveling, you’ll want to wear sunglasses if possible to help protect your eyes.
