SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — While details are still being determined, it looks like a major winter storm will impact the northern plains next week.
Tim Masters at the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls says to expect a variety of precipitation.
There are several ways to avoid flooding during the upcoming storm.
Consider clearing your neighborhood storm drains to provide a path for melting snow and rain, double check downspouts, drainage and sump pumps around your home and clear snow around your foundation.
Masters says the storm will take its time moving through and that some maps show the potential for a foot or more of snow from Rapid City through the Watertown area into central and northern Minnesota.

Current indications point to widespread rain by late Monday and Tuesday, and this could lead to street flooding.
If you're able to, try to shovel storm drains to give the snow melt and rain a path. pic.twitter.com/aBN5wE8L7i
