DELL RAPIDS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Fireworks on July 4th scared Blue, an Emu at Willow Meadows Farm near Dell Rapids, and she escaped. Her owners have since been working with Animal Control, Game Fish & Parks, and the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Department to return her safely home. Initially, they opted to say nothing to their followers in an effort to protect Blue. The emu is scared of people, and with her strength they don’t want anyone spooking her.
Blue has recently become a bit of a social media star which owner Kim Hubers, told KELO Radio News is concerning to her. “If people drive by or yell at her they could scare her off and we don’t see her again or we have to put her down. …She is most important and this might take us a long time to get her back to the farm, if we even can, so we really need her to feel safe and peaceful where she is at to have a chance.” Willow Meadows Farm hopes they can turn social media into a positive thing for Blue, posting on their Facebook page “if other people intervene, our chances of bringing her home alive are slim to none”.
Hubers says they have a plan and specific instructions to follow. When Blue returns home, she says people are welcome to visit her at Willow Meadows where it’s safe for them and her.
