SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — South Dakota made the middle of the list for 2022’s best states for beekeeping.
Lawnlove.com looked at several metrics like total honey production, number of active colonies, and honey suppliers.
California came in first as the best state for beekeeping, North Dakota came in third, and South Dakota was 22nd.
South Dakota does have the 3rd highest honey-producing colonies, but we also ranked 3rd in the fewest honey suppliers.
North Dakota yielded more than 28,000 pounds of honey in 2021, the most of any state.
We did tie Wyoming, North Dakota, and Nebraska for the fewest beekeeping associations across the country.
Lawn Love compiled the list to mark National Pollinator Week, which begins on June 20th.
