YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) –Many counties across South Dakota are struggling with rising jail costs, either from jails they run or from sending inmates to a different county.
Senator Art Rusch of Vermillion said that will be one of the topics of a legislative summer study this year.
Rusch listed Lincoln, Lawrence and Brown counties as some of those asking lawmakers for assistance. Lincoln County currently houses inmates at the Minnehaha County Jail.
Rusch added officials in Yankton and Watertown are considering restructuring their jails.
The legislature’s Executive Board will meet later this spring to appoint members to the summer study committees.
