SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The first flakes are falling in what’s predicted will be the Sioux Falls area’s first major winter storm of the season.

The heaviest snow in Sioux Falls is expected to fall in the late morning and early afternoon, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Brittany Peterson.
The latest accumulation forecast from the NWS, published at 5:26 a.m., called for as many as 7 to 10 inches of snow in Sioux Falls, though there’s still some uncertainty. 0.4 inches had fallen in Sioux Falls as of 6 a.m. Friday.

While overall totals remain largely unchanged, do think it is worth noting that a localized band of heavier snow across SW Minnesota may cause totals to exceed a foot in some areas!

Southwest Minnesota appears to be in line for the highest snowfall totals. 10 to 13 inches are possible in Worthington, according to the NWS.

Blizzard conditions are not expected with this storm, though wind gusts could cause some drifting snow and reduce visibility on highways. Check up-to-date road conditions here.

* WHAT…Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to
12 inches.
* WHERE…Portions of east central and southeast South Dakota,
northeast Nebraska, northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota.
This includes the tribal lands of the Flandreau Santee Sioux
Tribal Nation.
* WHEN…Until midnight CST tonight.
* IMPACTS…Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Patchy
blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The
hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening
