SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Sioux Falls Police are looking for a man who they believe plays some role in the theft of 17 firearms in the Sioux Falls area and beyond.
Authorities are seeking Mitchell Luis Arevalo, 23, from Sioux Falls on theft charges on a $10,000 cash bond.
Through a lead from a stolen pair of Apple AirPods which were tracked to a house in the 200 block of South Summit Avenue, the police obtained a search warrant. The AirPods were stolen from a vehicle in the 1000 West Glen Eagle Circle area Oct. 14.
When they searched the home, they found 17 guns–12 of them were stolen in the Sioux Falls area. Police say nine of the guns were stolen in Minnehaha County, two from McCook County, one from Moody County, one from Lincoln County, and one from Lyon County, Iowa. Most were handguns but there was one AR-15 assault rifle and three shotguns.
The investigation is ongoing. Officer Sam Clemens says the guns were stolen between August and October.
Clemens again reminded citizens to take their guns out of their vehicles over night and to take their keys and lock the vehicles. He says there are groups of people that go from car to car looking for firearms.
