SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — A hot, muggy Saturday turned into a dark and stormy afternoon south and east of Sioux Falls.
The storm approached from southwest of Lennox, over Harrisburg and Shindler, then into northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota.
Tornado sirens sounded in Harrisburg about 4:15 p.m. That was followed by near darkness and heavy sideways rain and wind.
Lincoln County emergency manager Harold Timmerman told KELO.com news that there was major tree damage in Lennox, but no one was injured. He said the roof on the high school was damaged and some residents were temporarily trapped in an elevator in an assisted living facility.
A KELO Radio listener sent in photos (right and below) of heavy tree damage and crops flattened in Worthing.
Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead said he called in additional deputies in anticipation of the storm. He said there were a couple of semis on their side. Sirens went off on the east side of the county by Brandon and Valley Springs reported no major damage.
In Sioux Falls, city emergency manager Reagan Smith said there were a few downed trees on power lines and a couple of stalled vehicles.
About 4:45 when KELO.com News news director drove up Cliff Avenue from Harrisburg and then downtown to the KELO Radio studios, the streets were mostly deserted in anticipation of the storm.
About 5:45, the storm left the Sioux Falls metro area, proceeding in a northeasterly direction further into southwest Minnesota.
