SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) – Summer is the season for baby bats. August is the time the new bats will start taking flight. They will learn how to catch insects and also look for new homes.
The Sioux Falls Police Department says if you find a bat hanging around the outside of your home, or on the ground leave it alone it will take off on it’s own. If the bat doesn’t move within 24 hours call Animal Control and have them remove the bat.
If you find a bat inside your home, if there has been no known contact with a human, close all doors leading out of the room and open a window or door to the outside. Turn off fans and lights the bat will likely exit on it’s own.
If somone has been bitten or scratched by the bat call Animal Control immediately at 605-367-7000, Animal Control will catch the bat and send it in for rabies testing.
