SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — The Sioux Falls City Council is considering a temporary ordinance that would prohibit issuing any licenses or permits for medical marijuana businesses until the State of South Dakota issues its proposed rules and regulations.
Council Member Greg Neitzert says, “Every local government, including counties passing other things, are struggling with this conundrum of this July 1st through October 29th gap.”
While medical marijuana becomes legal on July 1st, the state has until October 29th to issue rules and regulations.
Neitzert said the temporary ban on permits would allow the city to review the State’s rules and regulations and bring clarity to the process. Neitzert said the city could have ordinances ready to go as soon as the state rules are enforced.
Council Member Janet Brekke opposed the ordinance, saying the Council should wait to hear from the joint marijuana task force before acting.
The Council voted 5-2 to proceed. The second reading on the ordinance is June 15. Council Members Brekke and Starr voted against the proposed ordinance.
