WATERTOWN, S.D. (KELO.com) — Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott is donating $10 million to a Watertown technical college.
Scott, a novelist and ex-wife of Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos, has pledged to give the majority of her wealth to charitable causes during her lifetime. Her gift to Lake Area Technical College is one of a number of donations she’s made to educational institutions.
Scott pledged to donate more than $4 billion to 384 organizations in December, including LATC and Mitchell Technical College. Gov. Kristi Noem revealed LATC’s donation amount at a fundraising event at the college on Monday.
“She came forward and said she wanted to give a gift to Lake Area Technical College in a way that had no strings attached, pay it all upfront and let you utilize it the best that you can,” Noem said at the annual Lake Area Technical College Governor’s Luncheon.
LATC President Mike Cartney told the audience that 74% of the school’s students graduate within two years, far outpacing other two-year schools across the country.
