SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The Children’s Inn started in 1977 as a two-bedroom shelter for children who were being abused or neglected.
Shortly after that, they extended their mission to be a domestic violence shelter.
“It’s discouraging that the need for safe shelter for victims of abuse in our community continues to grow,” says Amy Carter with Children’s Inn.
“But we are fortunate at Children’s Inn that we are going to be able to meet that growing need with the expansion of our facility and our building of a new larger shelter.”
The new building will be located at 2101 E. 8th Street in Sioux Falls next to the Empower Campus. It will increase the number of bedrooms from a current 24 to 38 bedrooms and the number of beds from 40 beds to 96 beds.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on May 4th at 11 a.m.
Carter says the new building is only made possible by the tremendous community support that they have had over their 40-plus years here serving Sioux Falls and the Sioux Falls area.
Governor Kristi Noem and Mayor Paul TenHaken will be in attendance.
