YANKTON, S.D. (WNAX) — Some South Dakota growers are preparing to plant industrial hemp this spring.
Katie Sieverding, executive director of the South Dakota Industrial Hemp Association, said advocates and lawmakers ironed out some details with the program in the 2021 legislative session. Those changes included lowering the minimum acreage from five acres to one-half and allowing indoor greenhouses.
Sieverding says farmers showed quite a bit of interest in growing industrial hemp when the state began the application process in
December 2020. She’s expecting additional growers to apply to grow the crop this spring.
Sieverding said when growers start spring seeding depends on what variety they choose to use.
Interested growers must apply through the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
