SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — In light of Derek Chauvin’s expected verdict in Minneapolis in the death of George Floyd, the Sioux Falls police have not heard of any planned protests.
However, police spokesman Officer Sam Clemens says the department has plans for various actions to keep people safe.
Clemens says, “We will stay aware of any situations and have an appropriate response if it is needed.”
On Memorial Day last year, a peaceful protest in support of Black Lives Matter and George Floyd turned into violence and vandalism in and near the Empire Mall in south Sioux Falls.
Last year, there were peaceful protests, both in support of law enforcement and for the accountability of the police in shootings where a person of color is killed.
