SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — On January 29, 2021, a South Dakota Highway Patrolman and Highway Patrolman Recruit were investigating a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 90 in the median near the 407 Mile Marker.
The Trooper had the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the original crash in his vehicle in the passenger seat. While parked on the shoulder of the Interstate, an eastbound vehicle failed to move over in response to the emergency lights on the Highway Patrol vehicle. That eastbound vehicle struck the rear of the SD HP vehicle at highway speeds.
The passenger in the SD HP vehicle received minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Both Troopers were also injured in the collision. The Troopers were also transported to local hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the vehicle which struck the Highway Patrol vehicle was issued a citation for careless driving, failure to stop for an emergency vehicle, and Causing an accident with a stopped emergency vehicle.
