SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — During a media call, Senator John Thune shared how he is prepared to participate in the peaceful transfer of power and join his peers this evening to finish the Electoral College count.
But the Senators’ optimism didn’t come without repudiation, Thune referred to the actions of those who stormed the Capitol as “thuggery” and attributed today’s happenings to a spread of false information-more specific false allegations of widespread voter fraud.
“I just think the constant information out there that there was widespread fraud has been disproven, Thune said. There has not been any evidence that has been submitted in the court of law, obviously, fraud is something you have to be able to prove.”
But the Senator didn’t stop there, he also shared how the allegations raised the expectations of President Trumps’ supporters in hopes that Congress could overturn the votes of millions, sparking the protest outside the Capitol today, while he described being escorted out by his security detail as the first objections for the state of Arizona were up for debate when the disruption occurred.
Other members of Congress were also escorted out, some being asked to put on a gas mask as tear gas was dispersed in the Capitol Rotunda amid skirmishes by supporters of President Donald Trump.
Thune also expressed his desire for President Trump to concede but doesn’t expect him to, he himself saw the election as over when the electoral college voted, while also referring to the Department of Justices’ investigation into voter fraud that turned up no evidence.
“In my view, the election was over when the Electoral College voted and we now have 50 states that certified their electors all on time and all in accordance with the law. We’ve had over 60 lawsuits settled, many ruled on by judges selected by President Trump and confirmed by a Republican Senate,” Thune said.
But Thune didn’t throw out the ideas of fraud not occurring entirely, stating that allegations of fraud occur every election but never enough to change the results and that this election was no different.
