PIERRE, S.D. (KELO.com) — Gov. Kristi Noem will host a conference call for South Dakota farmers and ranchers on Wednesday, Jan. 6 at 10:45 am CST to discuss the merger of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture.
In August of last year, Noem announced her plan to merge the Department of Agriculture (SDDA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) into one department – the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR). Noem stated that her goal was to better serve the citizens of South Dakota while taking advantage of synergies in state government. She also stated that the merger would save taxpayers money by reducing duplication of services, which could potentially eliminate five full-time positions including a high-paying cabinet secretary position.
South Dakota would become the only state in the Great Plains region that does not separate its environmental protection agency from its department of agriculture.
