SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The City of Sioux Falls Environmental Division is leading an update of the City’s Sustainability Master Plan, originally developed in 2012. This plan serves as a roadmap for a Sioux Falls that is environmentally healthy, economically prosperous, and equitable in opportunity for all. Planning activities will begin in early 2021.
In the past few months, the global pandemic has shed light on how important preparedness is and how global events can impact the local level. In this way, the update is timely because sustainability planning works toward preparedness and resilience to environmental change, natural hazards, and other disruptions that may occur. The Sustainability Master Plan also enables the City to develop common goals and build support within the community and local government for the desired future of Sioux Falls.
“Over the past few years, the City of Sioux Falls has made great strides within our operations and throughout our community to expand sustainability initiatives, including increasing recycling and waste diversion, converting streetlights to energy-efficient LEDs, and conserving millions of gallons of water,” said Mayor Paul TenHaken. “Our residents care deeply about our river and a healthy environment, and this plan will be a way to expand our efforts and leadership in sustainability to build an even more vibrant community for all.”
Community engagement and participation will be imperative to the plan development. Multiple opportunities for the public to provide ideas and feedback on sustainability direction and initiatives will be a part of the process. Engagement activities may include workshops (virtual and/or in person) and an online survey.
“Public engagement allows the sustainability planning to be community-driven, which is essential for a plan to represent community desires, have broad support, and be effective in the long term,” says Holly Meier, Sustainability Coordinator.
A Steering Committee will help oversee the process and is currently being formed. Members will include community stakeholders and City staff.
The City is currently seeking applications for citizen representatives to serve on the Committee. Interested persons should have an interest in sustainability and a strong commitment to public service. An application form may be obtained at https://siouxfalls.org/green.
