SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The historic State Theatre, which has been closed for nearly 30 years, is reaching a long-awaited milestone: The renovated landmark in downtown Sioux Falls will reopen to the public for movies on Dec. 11.
Before opening the auditorium doors for movies, the Theatre lobby will be open for concession sales, and the purchase of Theatre memberships and gift cards from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 27 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 28 for Small Business Saturday.
Santa will visit on Nov. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to greet shoppers of all ages from the Box Office window.
A formal grand reopening celebration will be scheduled later, after the COVID-19 pandemic is more under control. But the Theatre is ready to host limited audiences, and that’s a big achievement for the community, said Allison Weiland, Executive Director for the State Theatre.
“We’re so excited about the revival of the State Theatre, not only to show off the amazing renovation work that’s been done,” Weiland said, “but for the State to return as a vibrant and valuable member of Sioux Falls’ business and entertainment community.”
For its premier on Dec. 11, the Theatre will feature a 7 p.m.showing of the holiday classic “White Christmas,” which stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera Ellen. Additional showings will be held on Dec. 12 and 13. Films are planned every weekend, Thursday through Sunday. “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring James Stewart and Donna Reed, is scheduled to be featured the following weekend. These two films are a part of the State Theatre’s Holiday Series sponsored by First PREMIER Bank.
“’White Christmas’ and ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ are two great holiday classics that are perfect to kickoff our opening weekends,” said Steven Dahlmeier, State Theatre General Manager. “And we will continue to add additional films and programming to our schedule throughout the month of December and into the new year.”All seating for films will be reserved. Tickets will be available online starting Dec 4. Seating will be limited due to social distancing standards, and guests will be required to wear masks.
“We want people to have the opportunity to see the restored interior and experience the cinematic upgrades that make the State Theatre a one-of-a-kind venue” Weiland said. “However, we know there are many people waiting for COVID to pass before venturing out to see a film, and we get it. Just know, we’ll still be here, waiting with a fresh batch of popcorn, seats more comfortable than your couch, and a great line-up of films.”
“We are both optimistic and committed to adapting to the challenges of today’s world” Weiland said. As the Theatre prepares to open, the staff realizes programing and operational adjustments may be necessary. Expanding Theatre rental opportunities mightbecome a larger portion of the business than originally planned, for example.
“We’re still busy getting ready for the opening, but we’re so happy to be reaching this milestone. I think people will be impressed with the renovation, and proud to have the Theatre back as a part of our city and state. This is a great accomplishment for the community,” she said.
Businessman and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford and the city of Sioux Falls are among those who deserve special thanks for making the reopening possible. In 2019, Sanford contributed $3.5 million toward the renovation of the auditorium area of the Theatre, and the city contributed $1.5 million for structural and exterior improvements.
