SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The City of Sioux Falls is seeking volunteers for the commission that will adjust City Council district boundaries for the next city election.
City Clerk Tom Greco says the Districting Commission will use the latest census data, carefully.
“There can be a lot of great ideas out there but if we are not keeping the council districts as equal as possible they are really not viable plans.”
That’s the challenge: whatever adjustments they make, the five election districts must contain approximately equal numbers of people. Another thing: the five districts must remain solid pieces. There can be no islands created.
Five members will be appointed to the commission by City Council: one member each from the Southwest, Southeast, Northwest, Northeast, and Central Districts of the City.
All applicants must be registered voters and live in the district for which they apply to represent.
The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Friday, November 6, 2020. Applications are available online at the city website or you can call the City Clerk’s office at 605-367-8080.
.uncil and appointments are expected to be made in early December. The Commission will convene in 2021 to develop and submit a Districting Plan to the City Council by mid-July 2021.
