SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The Community Blood Bank Board of Directors, at Sanford USD Medical Center and Avera McKennan Hospital, have declared a critical shortage of blood for the Sioux Falls area.
Due to increasing demands on the need for blood and the decreases in collections associated with issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Community Blood Bank has moved into a critical shortage status. Currently, local blood supplies are seriously low with an overall decrease in supplies between 40 – 50%.
“We have made some movement towards maintaining a stronger blood supply level for the community in the last week,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “The supplies were so depleted that it will take an additional week or two of above-average collections to bring our community’s blood supply up to standard levels. We encourage residents to continue to schedule their donation appointments at both mobile blood drives and our donor rooms at Avera McKennan Hospital and Sanford Medical Center.
