
STURGIS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Here are the latest crime and crashes numbers from the Rally as of 6 a.m. today from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
Fatal Crashes:
Update: A 55-year-old woman has died of injuries sustained in a one-vehicle crash on Wednesday, Aug. 12, seven miles east of Hill City: At 9:30 p.m., on U.S. Highway 16, mile marker 47, a 2019 Harley Davidson FLHTK Ultra Limited was westbound when it struck a calf standing in the driving lane. The motorcycle tipped over and both occupants were thrown from the motorcycle. The 55-year-old male driver suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries. The 55-year-old female passenger received life-threatening injuries and died Thursday, Aug. 13, at a Rapid City hospital. Neither were wearing a helmet. Charges are not pending.
Names Released: Names have been released of those involved in a three-vehicle fatal crash that occurred Monday, Aug. 10: At 5:15 p.m., U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 49, three miles west of Sturgis, a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle was westbound on U.S. Highway 14A when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and crossed the center line colliding with two eastbound motorcycles. William Cooper of College Station, TX, who was the 22-year-old driver of the westbound Harley Davidson, was airlifted to a Rapid City hospital where he later was pronounced dead. Ronald Ratzel of Ceres, NY, who was the 55-year-old driver of an eastbound 2014 Indian Motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Steven Peterson of Cuba, NY, who was the 60-year-old driver of the third motorcycle, a 2005 Harley Davidson, suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries. Helmets were not used.
Injury Crashes:
At 11:25 a.m., Thursday, Erickson Ranch Road, three miles east of Summerset: A 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle was southbound on Erickson Ranch Road when the driver lost control while negotiating a right-hand curve. The vehicle went across the center and crashed into the front of a northbound 2019 Chevy Blazer. The 34-year-old male driver of the motorcycle, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries. The 63-year-old male driver of the vehicle was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. No charges are pending.
At 11:40 a.m., Thursday, U.S. Highway 16, mile marker 40, south edge of Hill City: A 2019 Harley Davidson FLHR was making a right-hand turn from a parking lot when it collided with an eastbound 2017 Harley Davidson FLHXS. The 72-year-old male driver of the Harley Davidson FLHR, who was wearing a helmet, received minor injuries. The 56-year-old male driver of the Harley Davidson FLHXS suffered minor injuries and the 66-year-old female passenger sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. Neither was wearing a helmet. No charges pending.
At 1:26 p.m., Thursday, South Dakota Highway 79, mile marker 124, three miles south of Vale: A 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle was northbound on South Dakota Highway 79 when the driver slowed down to turn left. A second motorcycle, a 2011 Harley Davidson, rear-ended the first motorcycle and a third motorcycle, also a 2011 Harley Davidson, then collided with the second motorcycle. The first driver, a 60-year-old male, was not wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. The second driver, a 60-year-old female who was not wearing a helmet, sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. The third driver, a 48-year-old male, was not injured. His passenger, a 54-year-old female, suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries. Neither occupants of the third motorcycle were wearing helmets. No charges are pending.
At 4:01 p.m., Thursday, Wildlife Loop Road, mile marker five, 16 miles northeast of Pringle: A 2019 Harley Davidson Road Glide motorcycle was eastbound when the driver failed to negotiate a right-hand curve. The vehicle went off the roadway. The 64-year-old male driver, who was wearing a helmet, received minor injuries. No charges are pending.
At 4:25 p.m., Thursday, Wildlife Loop Road, mile marker eight, eight miles southwest of South Dakota Highway 87 and the Wildlife Loop Road Junction: A 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle was westbound when it had to suddenly stop to avoid a collision with a vehicle in front of it. The driver lost control and the two occupants were thrown from the motorcycle. The 55-year-old male driver sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries. The 26-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries. Both were wearing helmets. No charges are pending.
At 5:42 p.m., Thursday, Interstate 90, mile marker 55, Rapid City: A 2015 Ford F-150 pickup was eastbound on Interstate 90 in the driving lane when it suddenly stopped due to another vehicle stopping ahead in the passing lane. The pickup was rear-ended by an eastbound 1999 Chevy Silverado pickup. The 32-year-old female driver of the Ford pickup was not injured. Two male passengers, ages 50 and 11, suffered minor injuries. All three occupants were wearing seat belts. Both occupants of the Chevy pickup received minor injuries. The 27-year-old male driver was not wearing a seat belt and the 23-year-old female passenger was wearing a seat belt. Charges are pending against the driver of the Chevy pickup.
At 6:32 p.m., Thursday, Intersection of U.S. Highway 212 and South Dakota 79, two miles south of Newell: A westbound 2011 Dodge Caravan had stopped at the intersection’s stop sign, but did not yield to an oncoming 2003 Harley Davidson motorcycle. The motorcycle driver lost control trying to avoid the Caravan. The 46-year-old female driver of the Caravan was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. Charges are pending. The 64-year-old male driver of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet and sustained life-threatening injuries.
At 8:26 p.m., Thursday, intersection of Highway 14A and Deadwood Street in Deadwood: A 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle tipped over at the intersection of Highway 14A and Deadwood. The 65-year-old male driver, who was not wearing a helmet, received minor injuries. Charges are pending.
At 9:10 p.m., Thursday, Victoria Lake Road, 15 miles south of Rapid City: A 2006 Jeep Commander was westbound on Victoria Lake Road when it went off the roadway and crashed through several trees. The 18-year-old male driver was not injured. Charges are pending against him. Four passengers – a 19-year-old male, a 16-year-old female, a 19-year-old female, and a 20-year-old male all received minor injuries. All of the occupants, except for the 20-year-old male, were wearing seat belts.
